Summer Bliss Tips
I love summer. Â Breathing in the fresh air and feeling the warmth of the sun on my toes is magic. Everywhere I go, I see people going about their day a little more carefree and relaxed.
On really hot days, however, there are a few things I keep in mind to stay comfortable and feeling good. Here are some of my favorite ways to beat the heat in my favorite season.
Stay Hydrated
I always begin my day with lots of water to get me started right.  Sometimes in the heat, water alone isn’t enough, so I infuse my water canister with cucumber, lemon, or mint.  I find it really refreshing and the electrolytes keep me energized.  Another refreshing treat is frozen watermelon cubes.  Added to water, they are delicious and very hydrating. Or try these Minted Watermelon Pops.
Use Sunscreen In Moderation
As the great debate on sunscreen continues to rage, I take a balanced approach. Â To ensure you get enough vitamin D, step into some rays either before 10am or after 4pm with no sunscreen on.
Studies show that we only require 15-30 minutes of sun on exposed skin each week to get enough vitamin D. The darker the pigment of one’s skin, the more sun is required.  When I’m out in the sun for longer periods and at peak times (between 10-4) I like to use natural zinc sunscreen that is easy on the skin and very effective in blocking harmful UV rays.
Protect Your Eyes
Thankfully sunglasses are available to block UV rays from our eyes, but with all the blue light that we are exposed to in fluorescent lights, computer, tv, and tablet screens, our eyes receive more damage than we think.
Ensuring we get enough of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin helps to give our eyes extra protection.  These nutritional compounds are found in spinach, brightly coloured bell peppers, and egg yolks, but it’s difficult to eat enough of these foods to make a difference.  Here’s a vision supplement I recommend to support your best eye health.
Siesta In The Shade
When the sun’s at its highest and I’ve been outside for a while, it’s time for a break.  I always make sure I have a sunshade or umbrella at the beach or I look for a shady spot to take a break.  There’s no need to go indoors if you have either of these two things. This is an excellent time to have a little snooze or get lost in a good book.
Be Adventurous
Summer is a time for new explorations, long walks along sandy beaches looking for shells, and cycling or hiking to new destinations.  Making time to fully enjoy the outdoors helps us to be at our best in all other areas of life.  Go out and enjoy it while it’s here!
