Ever been eating so healthy when all of a sudden a big event comes along to derail your efforts?
Christmas hits, you’re entertaining out-of-town guests, or you go to and all-inclusive resort… Fortunately there’s a way to curb sugar cravings with healthy treats.
It’s fun to celebrate and we all need to ditch routine sometimes. The challenge is how to get back to eating as usual when the party’s over.Â
I recently made pancakes and bacon for brunch and really enjoyed it. While I used organic spelt flour, pure maple syrup, and gluten-free bacon, it was still very indulgent. Later in the day, I felt sluggish. Funny enough, the next day I had a huge craving for a candy bar.
Cravings Can Become Habits
I tend to give in to cravings, and move on. Why overthink it? The challenge lies in going back to more natural snacking. What helps me a lot is keeping healthier treats handy for when those sugar cravings come knocking.
Eat Healthy Treats
We should be able to indulge and not lose days afterwards due to poor digestion. It is possible to have treats and still feel good. I’m currently testing out some new treat recipes to share with you soon on the blog. In the meantime, try this:
Snack Re-Con
Do your future self a big favour and stock up on healthy-alternative snacks for when cravings hit. Start by doing a little research on your snacking tendencies. Consider what you tend to crave. Sweet or savory foods? Crunchy or moist textures?
Find a Food Twin
Look for a healthier alternative you can make ahead and store for convenience. Develop the habit of grabbing one of your pre-made snacks before you run out the door. Pop it in your purse or car for when a craving hits. Not only will this keep you on track with good eating habits, it’ll save you money.
But I Don’t Bake!
Finding and trying new recipes can be overwhelming for some of us and that’s ok. This doesn’t have to mess with your goals though. There are plenty of healthier snack options at the natural values section of your grocery store.
Some Of My Favs:
LARA Bars are a fig-nut bar that come in a variety of flavours and combinations. They have a natural sweetness that does the trick for me and they fit neatly into my bag.
Mary’s Organic Crackers are crunchy and are a great savoury snack. Toss some into a baggie and off you go.
These MicroBiome Bars are a really tasty snack that will help you balance and nourish your digestive health. They’re pre-packaged and are just the right size for a quick snack.
Remember Your Goal
Having healthier treats around is great, just make sure you get back to snacking on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. My natural go-to’s are an apple with a handful of almonds, trail mix, or cut up carrots & celery. These are portable snacks that are great for on-the-go.
