How are you doing?
Life is charging forward in spite of uncertainty and ever-changing expectations and guidelines for how to go about your day to day life and work.
The times we’re in call for an extra dose of care and grace on ourselves and each other. It’s completely normal to be feeling anxious at times as you settle into another season of “the new normal.”
When you feel like there’s no time or no personal space to find solace, food can become a source of comfort.
Like I’ve stated before, I believe in the 90/10 rule where 90 percent of the time I eat a variety of highly nutritious food and 10 percent of the time I enjoy treats. What’s interesting is that as the years go by, the types of treats I most enjoy include higher quality ingredients. I suppose because my tastebuds are more accustomed to the flavours of natural food, the synthetic stuff doesn’t hold the same appeal as it used to.
But all that can go out the window when your emotions take over.
The link between sugar and mental health that I’ve written about in the past is a real thing and it’s been more widely experienced this year for many. Dr. Kelly Brogan wrote a book recently, citing a great deal of research that confirms the truth about depression and how lifestyle and nutrition are huge factors in the state of our minds and emotions.
Mental health is a complex topic with many different angles and faces. I don’t have all the answers and encourage open and respectful dialogue for healing. It’s very easy in our culture of physician prescribed solutions to stop short of looking at other factors in our lives and habits that may be affecting our mental health.
Asking for help and support to feel your emotional best is one of the most important things you can do for your health and your loved ones. I encourage you to educate and advocate for your best health, while partnering with your team of trusted health professionals. As you do, you’ll not only find suitable solutions, but you’ll become the whole person you were meant to be.
