Fruit’s juicy, sweet flavour is a refreshing treat – especially when it’s in season. Unlike processed sugary snacks though, fruit is full of fibre, vitamins, and antioxidants that are building blocks to good health.
Some people steer clear of eating too much fruit because they’re concerned about consuming too many calories from sugar. It’s important to know that not all sugars are created equal.
When fresh fruit needs to travel a longer distance to get to your fridge, smoothies can take centre stage.  Stock up on wild or organic frozen berries because they’re free from the pesticides that are known to be sprayed liberally on non-organic crops.
You can use a high powered blender to incorporate other immune-boosting superfoods like kale, ginger, and chia seeds to give your snack a nutritional punch. Here’s a great place to start:
Frozen Berry-Kale Smoothie
Ingredients:
- â…“ of a banana
- Handful of kale
- Small piece peeled ginger root
- ¼ cup frozen cherries
- ¼ cup frozen blueberries
- 1 cup unsweetened nut or oat milk
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- ½ tsp flax seeds
- cold water (as needed)
Make it:
- Add ingredients to a high-powered blender in the order listed.
- Add cold water if you want to thin out the consistency.
- Pour and enjoy!
