Kids & Healthy Fats

Share

Weight loss has been a hot topic for generations. For a long time, we’ve been taught to see any and all fat as bad. But when it comes to kids, it’s quite the opposite.

The Growing Years

So much happens to our children’s bodies while they sleep. Longer, stronger muscles are formed, complex brain receptors multiply, bone cells lengthen each of their limbs. It’s a miraculous process that’s easy to take for granted.

It’s also easy to miss out on the essential nutrients that are required for optimal growth. “If he’s going to get to soccer practice on time, it’s gotta be a quick meal.” I’ve said these words more than a few times over recent years.

So how do we ensure that the growing little bodies in our life are getting the proper levels of healthy fats required for healthy growth? A little planning and a little supplementation.

Filling in the Gaps

Making nutritionally-dense meals and snacks ahead of time are always a good solution. Add to that giving your family a high-quality supplement can put your mind at ease, knowing that their overall health and growth are supported.

The Good Fats

EPA, DHA, and vitamin D are key to growing brains and bodies. Here’s how it works:

Brain cells need unsaturated fatty acids, only found in food, for optimal function. They help the brain develop in the areas of learning ability, concentration, memory, behaviour, and mood.

A 2009 study published in the Journal of Nutrition estimated that nearly 90 percent of children consume less than the 351mg of EPA/DHA per day recommended by American Dietician Association and the Dieticians of Canada.

Mealtime Tips

To ensure your kids are getting enough healthy fats in their meals, consider adding some of the following foods to your child’s plate: Flax Seeds, wild pacific salmon, chia seeds, almonds, avocado. They all boast high scores of omega 3 fatty acids and can dress up everyday meals.

Do you have a picky eater? A fish oil supplement is a good way to go. Click here to learn about the one I recommend.

The fact that you’re reading this means that you care about caring for your family. May your children enjoy healthy growth so they can embark on their future with strength, energy, and confidence.
